Do you remember Daggubati Raja? The charming, soft-spoken actor is known for playing what could be described as ‘vanilla’ characters. Raja’s career was on the rise throughout the ’80s; he was busy working around the clock and was content with the roles he received, even if they only involved a handful of scenes.
However, by the early ’90s, Daggubati Raja found himself at a crossroads. His on-screen persona as a gentle, accommodating, and submissive character began to clash with his real-life identity. His reluctance to say ‘no’ was interpreted in unexpected ways by filmmakers. He could see from a distance that a decision was inevitable. It was time to make the choice he had been contemplating for a while. After a brief holiday in 1996, filled more with self-reflection than relaxation, he decided to retire from acting.
Daggubati Raja appeared in films like Sathi Leelavathi Mappilai, appearing as the second lead to more established actors like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. He has also acted in a few Telugu films like Chinnari Sneham, Sankellu and Shri Krishnarjuna Vijayam. A recent photo of the actor is going viral on social media at present. Fans are surprised to see the photo as the 58-year-old actor seems to have aged dramatically and is barely recognisable.
In a 2019 interview with a news portal, Daggubati Raja said, “For the first time in my life, I started saying ‘no’ to directors. I felt there was no creativity left, and I wasn’t satisfied with my work anymore. I was just appearing in movies without any real purpose.” Raja had a clear understanding of the film industry and recognised that the hero bore the responsibility for the film’s success.
“I was hesitant about doing Kadhal Kottai, where, once again, I had just five scenes. But Agathiyan wanted me for the role, and it ended up being talked about. That experience changed the way I viewed movies up until then,” Daggubati Raja reflected on taking on a project during the ending phase of his career.
