Even two months after its release, Sandeep Vanga Reddy directorial Animal continues to make headlines. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed how his 7-year-old son reacted when he watched Ranbir Kapoor starrer. Vanga shared that even though his son, who is named Arjun Reddy, does not understand the concept of ‘hits’ or ‘superhits’, he watched an edited version of Animal.
“What we did was, we removed all the scenes he shouldn’t be watching, put a new edit on a hard disk, and showed that to him. This was during New Year’s in Goa. He saw the film, but I’ve chopped all the A-rated scenes,” Vanga told Siddharth Kannan in a recent interview and then added, “He said that the underwear action scene was very funny.”
Vanga further opened up about ‘ideological battles’ with his wife and said, “I get genuine feedback at home. She felt that there was a lot of bloodshed. She didn’t say anything about misogyny and all.”
Released on December 1, Animal revolves around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. The film shows Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gun down 200 people with machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggles to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor). The film earned over Rs 900 crore at the box office.
Even though Animal ruled the box office, the film has also been accused of glorifying misogyny and toxic masculinity by many. Previously, in another interview, Sandeep Reddy Vanga lashed out at those calling his film ‘misogynistic’ and shared that it is not right to use such terms for either of his movies, Animal or Kabir Singh.
“Misogyny is disrespect to women. This is the actual definition, right? So no. Even Kabir Singh, even Animal, even me as a person. I always feel my production house name is Bhadrakali Pictures and I don’t know why people think…not too many people, only these 15-20 jokers. But it’s a wrong word to use on Kabir Singh, Animal,” Vanga told Galatta Plus.
