Pushpa 2 Actor Fahadh Faasil On How Malayalam Cinema Is Different: 'We Don't Have OTT Backup'
Fahadh Faasil said Malayalam cinema still lacks substantial support from OTT platforms and needs to prove its mettle in theatres.

Popular Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil is presently on a roll with his latest release Aavesham, where his portrayal of Ranga has gained a lot of appreciation. With many other films in his filmography price, the actor is presently one of the leading performers in the South Indian film industry. Despite being a part of some highly successful films in the South, Fahadh Faasil feels like there is still a lot of difference between the Malayalam cinema and the rest of Indian cinema.

In a conversation with the YouTube channel Galatta Plus, the actor opened up on how Malayalam cinema still lacks substantial support from OTT platforms and thus needs to prove its mettle in theatres in the coming days.

“The trade has grown for Malayalam cinema, but our cinema even now doesn’t have a solid back-up of an online streaming platform. We need to prove our mettle in theatres for any of these things to come in. Unlike the rest of India, where almost 80 per cent of films are sold even before the shoot is started, things are different for us," he said.

‘Malayalam cinema’s model is different’

Faasil also spoke on how the model of Malayalam cinema works and explained that makers need to finish the film and release it first to prove its potential before moving to OTT. “This approach has influenced our industry’s cinematic culture, emphasising the importance of crafting compelling stories and producing quality content," he added.

Fahadh Faasil’s recent remarks spark controversy

During the same conversation, the actor’s remarks on how one should consume cinema sparked a fresh controversy among fans. “I don’t want people to talk about actors and performances at the dining table. They can just discuss this on the drive back home…not more than that. Cinema has a limit. There is more than what you can do with your life than watching cinema," he said.

However, the views of the actor did not go well with a lot of fans as many took to social media and expressed their disagreement. While some criticised the actor for disrespecting cinema and the fans, some also highlighted how cinema has become a medium to achieve anything.

On the professional front, Fahadd Faasil was recently seen in Avesham, which is doing exceptionally well at the box office. Next, he will be soon seen as IPS officer Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat in Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2. He is also playing a significant role in Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan.
