'He Didn't Like It': Hema Malini Opens Up About How Dharmendra Told Her Not To Contest Elections

Bollywood actor Hema Malini is contesting the Lok Sabha election with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the third time. During a recent interview, she revealed that her husband, Dharmendra, was not pleased when she first decided to join politics. He was concerned about her safety. Alongside, she remembered how the late actor Vinod Khanna helped her when she was beginning her political journey.

In a recent interview with News18, Hema Malini shared her husband Dharmendra’s concerns about her political career. She said, “Dharamji didn’t like it. He told me not to contest elections as it’s a very difficult task. He said I have experienced that. So when he said that it’s a difficult task, I thought let me take it as a challenge.” She mentioned that Dharmendra faced challenges due to his fame, with people always wanting to talk to him. She also added that, as a woman, she faces similar challenges, but she handles them well.

Dharmendra, who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the BJP from Bikaner, Rajasthan, between 2004 and 2009, faced criticism for not attending Parliament sessions regularly. Instead, he focused more on his acting career and personal duties.

Hema also shared how the late actor Vinod Khanna influenced her political journey. She said, “Vinod Khanna inspired me because he took me with him for his election campaign. He taught me a lot, how to give a speech and how to face the public. It’s not a joke to give a speech between 5000-6000 people. You get scared the first time.” Vinod Khanna, who was a member of the BJP, served two terms as an MP from Gurdaspur. He also held positions as Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, as well as Minister of State for External Affairs.

On the film front, Hema Malini is best known for films including Sholay, Naseeb, Prem Nagar, and Baghban. She last appeared in the film Shimla Mirchi. Now, she is all set to star in a slew of upcoming Television series including Yug, Jai Mata Ki, and Women of India- Amrapali.
