Pawsitively Safe Christmas: Tips from Your Vet to Keep Furry Friends Merry and Bright
By embracing these safety measures, you can ensure a holiday season filled with joy, love, and the comforting presence of your cherished pets.

The holiday season is a magical time filled with joy, laughter, and festive cheer, and as a veterinarian, I want to make sure that our beloved pets can partake in the merriment without any health hazards. Dr. Shivangi Raina, Product Executive Manager, Vet Team, Drools shares some essential tips to ensure your pets stay safe and sound during Christmas celebrations.

  1. Mind the Munchies:While we savour the delectable holiday treats, it’s crucial to keep certain foods out of reach for our furry friends. Chocolate, nuts, and certain fruits can be toxic to dogs and cats. Consider sharing pet-friendly alternatives and keep tempting treats safely stored away.
  2. Tree Trouble:Christmas trees are a centrepiece of our holiday decor, but they can pose a risk to pets. Ensure your tree is securely anchored to prevent curious cats or playful pups from toppling it. Additionally, be cautious with tinsel, ornaments, and lights as they can be tempting playthings, especially for cats.
  3. Hide the Holly and Mistletoe:Traditional holiday plants like holly and mistletoe add a festive touch, but they can be harmful if ingested. Opt for artificial versions or place real ones out of your pet’s reach to prevent any accidental nibbling.
  4. Gift-Wrapping Wisdom:The sounds of wrapping paper may excite us, but they can pique the curiosity of our pets. Monitor them closely to avoid ingestion of ribbons, bows, or small pieces of paper, which can pose a choking hazard. Choose pet-safe materials when wrapping gifts.
  5. Peaceful Playtime:Amidst the holiday hustle and bustle, ensure your pets have a quiet and safe space to retreat to. Loud noises, such as fireworks or popping champagne corks, can be distressing for animals. Create a cosy sanctuary with their favourite toys and bedding.
  6. Stay Hydrated:With all the festivities, it’s easy to overlook the basics. Ensure your pets have access to fresh water, especially with changes in routine during holiday gatherings.
  7. Cheers to Safety:Keep alcoholic beverages out of reach as alcohol can have severe toxic effects on pets, leading to symptoms like vomiting and difficulty breathing. Promptly clean up spills and secure glasses to prevent accidental ingestion.
  8. Pet-Proof Pyrotechnics:Fireworks and other pyrotechnics can be both frightening and dangerous for pets. Keep them indoors during displays, create a calm environment, and provide a safe space where they can retreat from the noise.
  9. Choking Hazard Caution:Dispose of wrapping materials promptly to prevent choking hazards, and monitor pets during present-opening festivities. Opt for larger, pet-safe toys, and be cautious of small decorations that may become unintended chew toys.By embracing these safety measures, you can ensure a holiday season filled with joy, love, and the comforting presence of your cherished pets. Wishing you and your furry companions a pawsitively wonderful Christmas!
