India is gearing up to celebrate the power of Shakti, Goddess Durga. This year, Navratri festivities will commence from October 3 and will end with Dussehra on October 12. In Hinduism, it is believed that Goddess Durga fulfils desires and removes troubles, sorrows and hardships. This year’s Navratri will see an auspicious alignment of dates. As per Panchang, the Ashtami and Navami tithi will coincide and fall on the same day, and Navami and Dashami will overlap. Hence, Navami and Dashami will be celebrated on October 12.
As per the Vedas, Puranas and scriptures, performing puja, worship, fasting, or other religious rituals on the Udaya Tithi, meaning the time when sunrise will occur, is considered beneficial. Religious activities performed on the Udaya Tithi are believed to be rewarding for devotees.
As per Panchang, there is a specific time to perform the Kanya Puja on Ashtami tithi. There are also specific times in the Panchang for those performing Kanya Puja on Navami.
Haridwar-based astrologer Pandit Sridhar Shastri in an interview with Local 18 shared that Udaya Tithi is considered to be an auspicious time in Hindu tradition. If a festival begins in the afternoon and extends into the next day as per the Gregorian calendar, then the festival must be observed on the Udaya Tithi. For those performing Ashtami Puja, October 11 will be the most auspicious day. Similarly, October 12 will be the best for performing Kanya Puja on Navami.
Kanya Puja is also known as Kanjak. It is a Hindu ritual that honours the nine forms of Goddess Durga during the Navratri festival. It is performed on the eighth or ninth day of Navratri. Nine young girls between the ages of 2 and 10 are worshipped on this day. The girls are dressed up, their feet are washed and offered food and clothing. A tilak is applied on their foreheads and they are offered with tender coconut and halwa-puri.
Pandit Sridhar Shastri explained that Navami tithi will start from the afternoon of October 11 and last until 10:57 am on October 12. Hence, those observing Kanya Puja on Navami should complete their rituals by 10:57 am. After this, Dashami tithi will commence. Devotees must perform Kanya Puja, havan and other rituals during this time. People believe that one will receive the blessings of Goddess Durga doing these.
