Marathi Language Day 2024: Marathi Bhasha Diwas Wishes, History and Significance

Marathi Bhasha Diwas (Marathi Language Day), observed annually on February 27, is a day dedicated to celebrating the rich cultural heritage and vibrant linguistic tapestry of the Marathi language. It holds immense significance for the Marathi-speaking community worldwide, commemorating the contributions of its legendary poet Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar (Kusumagraj).

Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tributes to Kusumagraj, and extended his wishes on the occasion of Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas.

Marathi is one of the most spoken languages in India. It has a total of 42 dialects, out of which some of the most common ones are Vaidarbhi, Zadi Boli, Konkani and Khandeshi. The language’s syntax and grammar come from Prakrit and Pali.

The day coincides with Kusumagraj’s birth anniversary. Following his passing in 1999, the Maharashtra government established this day in his honour, recognizing his immense contribution to Marathi literature.
