With a surge in stress levels and an increase in the number of C – sections, popular opinion says that yoga is the best therapy for your unborn child. Swami Gambhirananda Saraswati of Shiv Darshan Yoga Vidyalaya, Choolai says, “Yoga helps a mother-to-be to calm their nerves and feel more connected to the baby within her womb. Other health issues such as high blood pressure, hypertension, cramps and diabetes can also be controlled to a great extent.” With over 30 years of experience in this service, she swears by the power of yoga for pregnant women. She explains, “Since yoga is very simple, women with no practice whatsoever can also start classes during their pregnancy. We understand their needs and start asanas that are subtle, yet effective in approach.” In fact, after consultation with a gynaecologist, pregnant women can start classes as early as their 45th day of pregnancy. Ramya, a software professional in her 1st trimester says, “I used to suffer from the problem of back pain. But after joining these classes, I feel much better. I am in more control of my diet as well.” During the first trimester, basic sitting and lying down yoga postures such as the Sukhasana and Vajrasana  are taught to relax the body. The second trimester involves more exercises that strengthen the pelvic and back muscles of the body while Pranayama help stress management in the third. Reshmi, a software professional and a Yoga enthusiast in her second trimester says, “I prefer a normal delivery, so my doctor recommended Yoga classes to me. I used to be very tired due to my long hours at work. But since I started these classes, my fatigue is under control.” Of course, in order to lose that baby bump after the baby is born, it is essential to continue these classes for up to six months after the delivery. With many yoga classes sprucing up across the city, women can enroll in these classes as per their convenience. With prices ranging from `350 to `1, 500 for a session of 90 minutes, you may finally take some time out for some much needed quality mother and child time. There are also maternity centres and hospitals that offer ‘antenatal’ exercises for women in their pregnancy. Rakhi Kapoor, founder of DWI Maternity Studio, Alwarpet elaborates, “Our programs are gradual and tailor-made according to the mother’s needs and state of pregnancy. We offer a mix of pilates and other exercises which can be fitted in to their everyday routine, we also invite spouses to these programmes to involve them in the entire process of their wife’s pregnancy.”
