Jamshedpur: A meritorious second-year student of the reputed business school, Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI) allegedly committed suicide on Friday night in his hostel room, two days after receiving a job offer from a consultancy firm.
The 23-year-old Chennai-based student, Chandra Mohan, had recently recovered from small pox but was reportedly suffering from depression, which might have prompted him to take the extreme step, police said on Saturday.
A suicide note recovered from his room mentioned about some other disease he was suffering, the sources said without elaborating, but added that the exact cause could be known only after post-mortem.
He was found hanging in his room frothing at the mouth last night, police said. It appeared that he also tried to slit his wrists. Mohan's parents have been informed of the incident. XLRI sources said, Chandra Mohan, who ranked among the top ten, had been happy after receiving the job offer and had attended classes in the morning but locked himself in his room thereafter.
His friends broke open his room's door in the presence of XLRI authorities when he failed to turn up for dinner and also refused to respond to repeated knocks. Mohan, who was found hanging from the ceiling was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended in the XLRI campus as it was the first such case in its five-decade old history. The XLRI authorities, who held a condolence meeting, this morning, decided to call off its two-day 'Homecoming-2006', programme for alumni scheduled to begin on Saturday.
