THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: World Ozone Day was celebrated as part of the International Year of Chemistry, organised jointly by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom and Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment on Saturday. The programme was formally inaugurated by K K Ramachandran, Member Secretary, KSCSTE in a solemn function, presided over by KSCSTE joint director Kamalashan Kokkal.K K Ramachandran, in his inaugural speech, stressed that environment and development should go hand in hand and overemphasis on any one of them only may be detrimental.Kokkal in his presidential address stressed that the unique feature of Kerala is its ‘Diversity’ which is being destroyed by anthropogenic activities. He reminded that it is the responsibility of the people of Kerala to act as ‘defenders of the planet Earth’ from further destruction. During the seminar Kamalakshan Kokkal, dealt in detail on the topic- Earth’s Atmosphere and Problems and Dr C P.Aravindakshan on the topic-Chemistry of Ozone.A district-level inter-school quiz was also conducted in which various schools from Trivandrum district participated. A Bijukumar, head of the KU Department of Aquatic Biology, was the quiz master. ENSAnandapadmanabhan and Aravind of Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom were the winners and Ashuthosh B Sai and Harita of Kendriya Vidyalya Pattom were the runner-up. C P Kumaran, Principal, K V Pattom presented the trophies to the prize winners
