Malda (WB): Police have charged the accused of Malda incident with attempt to rape after the Calcutta High Court directed it to file a progress report in the case.

The High Court on Friday asked the Malda police to file the progress report within two weeks on its investigation into the incident wherein a 55-year-old man was allegedly attacked by his neighbour, who had also been accused of attempting to rape the former's widowed daughter.

"A complaint of attempt to rape has been received on Saturday and the investigation has been launched into the case," Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Modi said.

The HC order was issued on a PIL which alleged that the woman had also been prevented from lodging any complaint on the rape bid by ruling party activists.

The HC also gave the 35-year-old woman liberty to lodge a complaint of rape attempt against the accused either before any magistrate or police.

The woman alleged that her neighbour Rintu Sheikh had attempted to rape her in July and on Monday night, he had hit her father with an iron rod on the head and the right eye. The accused was arrested and sent to eight days police custody yesterday, the police said.
