Violence in Srinagar, Akhnoor over Amarnath land row
Protestors clashed with police in Akhnoor on the outskirts of Jammu.

new Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir is on the boil over the Amarnath land shrine issue. There have been massive protests in Srinagar after the death of a youth in police firing on Monday.

At least a dozen people have been injured in clashes in parts of downtown Srinagar and Maisuma. There has been a complete shutdown in the city. Schools have been closed and public transport is off the roads. Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been deployed to bring the situation under control .

Clashes between protestors demanding restoration of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and police have also taken place in Akhnoor near Jammu in which 10 people have been injured.

Meanwhile, curfew continues in Jammu, Samba and Kathua. In Samba two people were killed and 30 injured in police firing on Monday.

The Amarnath Yatra Sangrash Samiti, an umbrella organisation of 35 outfits, has extended the bandh in Jammu by another five days.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh are discussing the situation with top government officials in Srinagar. Governor NN Vohra is chairing the meeting.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also called for an all-party meeting in New Delhi on to discuss the crisis.
