New Delhi: India's Sania Mirza failed to capitalize on a promising start and was knocked out in the first round of the women's singles event of the 2011 US Open, going down to Israel's Shahar Peer, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-6 at Flushing Meadows in New York.
After winning the first set, Sania's game fell apart in the next two as she managed to win just four more games against Peer who entered the competition ranked 24th in the world.
Sania came into the match with a 4-1 head to head record against her Israeli opponent, having in fact won the last four matches against her, the only loss coming at Stanford in 2005.
However, she had been victorious in all her encounters against her since then - the latest being at Osaka, Japan, a couple of years ago.
Sania's doubles partner, Elena Vesnina of Russia also exited form the tournament in the opening round. Vesnina was beaten 2-6, 4-6 by Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands.
