UP MLA surrenders in murder case
Although Mukhtar Ansari is wanted in connection with the recent riots in Mau, he has surrendered in an old case of murder.

Ghazipur (UP): Independent MLA from Mau, Mukhtar Ansari, wanted for inciting communal riots in the area, has surrendered before a fast track court here on Tuesday.

The court remanded Ansari to judicial custody for 14 days.

He surrendered in connection with an old case of attempt to murder lodged against him in 1996.

Police had been conducting raids in Lucknow, Mau and Ghazipur to nab Ansari, whose name figured in an FIR lodged in connection with Mau riots.

A special Task Force constituted to arrest him was also unsuccessful.

A case of murder, inciting riots and violation of curfew was lodged against Ansari in connection with the riots that erupted over Dussehra festivities and left nine dead.

However, the person who had filed the FIR later said that Ansari was not involved in the murder of his brother and blamed the Mau administration for framing him in a fake case.

Opposition parties, including the BJP had accused the state government of shielding Ansari as he was supporting the government and his brother was a Samajwadi Party MP from Ghazipur.
