Two addicts die in Bihar after complete ban on liquor
After Gujarat, Nagaland and Mizoram, Bihar has now become the fourth state where liquor has been completely banned.

Bihar: Two habitual alcohol drinkers including a policeman - who had developed withdrawal symptoms after Bihar became a dry state on April 5 - died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and Katihar Medical College and Hospital (KMCH).

The policeman who died at PMCH has been identified as Raghunandan Besra. He was not able to drink alcohol after the ban. The name of second person who died at KMCH is yet to be known.

It was learnt that Besra, an assistant sub-inspector, used to consume alcohol every day and was undergoing treatment at PMCH due to various health issues.

A hospital source said, Besra was a habitual drinker and suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome. On April 7, his condition started deteriorated and he died in the hospital.

He was posted at Kundawa-Chainpur police station of East Champaran district. He was a native of Purnia district and had joined the force as a constable in 1990.

The second incident was reported from Katihar after a middle aged man died at KMCH on April 8. He was referred to the hospital from a local de-addiction centre.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar fulfilled his election promise by ordering a complete ban on liquor in Bihar. While country-made liquor was already prohibited in rural areas across the state since April 1, 2016, the CM on April 5 announced that Foreign Made Indian Liquor, too, has been banned with immediate an affect.

Since liquor was banned in Bihar, hundreds of patients have knocked at the doors of de-addiction centres and hospitals in the state. Queues of those seeking de-addiction therapies were getting so long that the government was planning to set up alcohol de-addiction centres at many places.

After Gujarat, Nagaland and Mizoram, Bihar has now become the fourth state where liquor has been completely banned.
