New Delhi: Kolkata Police on Sunday foiled a bid by Trinamool Congress (TC) workers to march to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee's residence.

TC workers were protesting "CPI(M) terror" on political opponents and the farming community at Nandigram in East Midnapore district.

Nandigram witnessed a seesaw battle on early Sunday morning between CPI(M) supporters and protesting farmers, who were resisting land acquisitions for setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) for the Salim group of Indonesia.

Five people were killed and six injured as violence gripped the village following reports that land acquisition notices were being served on the farmers.

Before marching towards the Chief Minister's residence, the partymen held a rally and blocked Gariahat Road in south Kolkata.

"We arrested 50 TC activists for blocking the road and disrupting traffic," police said as quoted by PTI.

Security in front of the Chief Ministers's residence has been strengthened.
