The Assam Police on Tuesday killed three suspected militants in heavy exchange of fire in the Bhuban Hills of Cachar near the Assam-Mizoram border. Three police officers suffered injuries in the encounter.
The firing took place when a team of Cachar Police, led by Superintendent of Police Nomal Mahatta, ventured into the Bhuban Hills, with three suspected members of the Hmar militant outfit arrested earlier in the day in Dhalai Ganga Nagar. The three were travelling in an autorickshaw. Police seized one AK-47 rifle, one pistol and other arms from the vehicle.
Other militants hiding in the area launched an ambush, opening fire on the officers. The police responded, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted for about an hour. In the crossfire, the three militant cadres – two from Cachar and one from Manipur — who were taken into custody were shot dead.
The Cachar district has been on high alert following this incident, with security forces intensifying operations to track down and neutralize remaining militant elements in the region. Mahatta said the police are committed to restoring peace and stability in the area and are working tirelessly to prevent further violence.
Local residents have expressed concern over the escalating violence and have urged for increased security measures to ensure their safety.
The Bhuban Hills, strategically important owing to its proximity to the Assam-Mizoram border, has been a hotbed of militant activity, necessitating continued vigilance by law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the operation, but an investigation is being carried out. The bodies of the militants have been sent for post-mortem, while the injured policemen are receiving medical treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
