THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state Anti-Piracy cell have arrested three natives of Bangalore on charges of piracy. Lumba Kaverappa, 49, Byra, 27, and Vinaya Kumar ,24, all natives of Bangalore, were arrested from Bangalore by a team led by Anti-Piracy cell SP Rajpal Meena and DySP S Rafeek. The case was taken up by the cell after it was found that pirated CDs of new Malayalam movies were selling like hot cakes from the wholesale video shops in the coastal belt of Beemapally here. The copyright owner of a film had also lodged a complaint with the anti-piracy cell about the sale of pirated CDs. According to the anti-piracy cell, after the pirated CDs were sent to various digital labs for examination, Chennai-based ‘QUBE’ lab found that the piracy was carried out at HMT theatre in Bangalore. It was also found that the piracy work was done on the midnight of December 12 last year after a secret screening in the theatre. The sophisticated Invisible Cyber Bottom Marking technique was employed to identify the theatre. Following the findings, Crime Branch chief ADGP Vincent M Paul directed the SP and the DySP to carry out the arrests. Lumba Kaverappa has been working as the manager of HMT theatre while Byra has been working as the operator and Vinaya Kumar has been working as the booking clerk. The cell also unearthed technical evidence which suggested that more than 60 film releases were pirated last year. The copies of the pirated CDs were transported for sale to other places within the country and abroad. According to anti-piracy cell, the accused had admitted to have taken `15,000 for making pirated copies of a single film.Meanwhile, another person who is suspected to have been part of the gang committed suicide just after the cell arrested the three other accused.
