'Thanthonni' is boring
Better to watch IPL 3 than this movie

Director: George Varghese

Crew: Prithviraj, Saikumar, Sheela Kaur, Suraj Venjaramood

The new face of Malayalam film industry Prithviraj as the hero, a huge team of veteran stars and matchless publicity across all media - the hype created by the film Thanthonni was very high till it hit the theatres on Friday. But in result, the industry witnessed yet another commercial potboiler without bothering to worry about finesse. Debutant director George Varghese seems to be content with a clichéd story and hence takes no pain to tell us anything novel.

'Thanthonni', means someone who is headstrong and does things on his own without caring about others. The film revolves around the character Kochukunju (Prithviraj) who is a member of a the wealthy Vadakkan Veettil family and happens to be a brat who lives life on his own. Vadakkan Veettil is a huge joint family where he lives with his mother, three uncles and their families. All in the family are well-placed except Kochukunju who has been a troublemaker right from childhood. To add some more spice, he is a son of missing father and had run away from home in his childhood only to come back as a pauper.

As expected, the film starts with some comedy and a stunt scene to introduce the protagonist and boringly narrating the storyline. In the first half, you can see the actor as the troublemaker everywhere – in the family and even in public, beating police officials and rivals of the family. To make it simple, you will wait for the interval to have a hot coffee or a puff to change your mood or even the way to exit!

In the second half, the movie changes dramatically. Kochukunju is shown as a young business tycoon who owns all the costly cars and moves around in a helicopter! It also shows that Kochukunju is in touch with his lost father Daveed (Saikumar), a writer, since he ran away, and Kochukunju's maternal uncles once tried to kill Daveed, as his profession didn’t suit the Vadakkan Veettil's legacy. What happens later is really a headache to the viewers. Some thunderous dialogues, a few nonsensical songs (except the one sung by Yesudas) and a couple of fights… it's all over!

The initial scenes dealing with Prithviraj moving around are entertaining. So are the scenes involving comedian Suraj Venjaramood in the first half. Prithviraj, who had a dream run last year with many super hits, has a natural charm and flair throughout the film (the only reason to watch the movie completely), but he should be more careful in choosing scripts. TA Shahid as a script writer fails miserably to win the hearts of the viewers. It's sad to say that the narrative style is totally boring and the story is very unconvincing. The texture is consistently bleak, rain-splashed and cloudy.

Oops!!! One thing just got missed out - the female lead. South Indian actor Sheela Kaur plays the role of Helen, the ladylove of Kochukunju. The importance of the character is such that she is seen in a couple of songs and barely half a dozen scenes.

Altogether, it's better to watch IPL 3 than watch this movie.
