CHENNAI: In a significant move, AIADMK leaders led by former minister C Ponnian took part in a CPI demonstration here on Tuesday, urging the Centre to back the resolutions passed against Sri Lanka. Ponnian said they were participating in the state-wide demo organised by CPI and like-minded mo-vements as per the orders from ‘Amma’ (AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa).Ponnian went on to say that his party would support CPI general secretary D Pandian, who has been towing the line of veteran CPI leader M Kalyanasundaram, to bring about a corruption-free government in the State. This was looked upon as an olive branch extended by the ruling party, which went alone in the civic polls and registered a resounding victory.CPM had announced that it would back the DMDK candidate in the ensuing by-election to the Sankarankoil Assembly constituency. “CPI state secretary D Panidian and Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran continue to air their voice in support of the affected Lankan Tamils. Their voices had kept the feelings of Tamils alive,” Ponnain added.Nedumaran said that there were expectations on the Indian government which had played key role in the past regarding the apartheid issues in South Africa.“Tamils feel that Rajapakse should be declared as a war criminal at UNHRC wherein India should back such a resolution at a time when several nations have taken a stand against Lanka considering the feelings of Tamils living across the globe,” he observed.Pandian urged that an international independent probe should be ordered into the acts of Lankan army.
