Supreme Court defers decision on monitoring CBI probe into Vyapam scam until July 31
The SC asked the CBI as to when it would take over the entire investigation into the scam, and appoint prosecutors to conduct trial in the cases.

Days after ordering a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Madhya Pradesh multi-crore Vyapam scam, the Supreme Court on Friday deferred the decision on monitoring the investigation until July 31.

The top court also asked the CBI as to when it would take over the entire investigation into the scam, and appoint prosecutors to conduct trial in the cases.

The Supreme Court on Friday heard petitions filed by Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas.

The Supreme Court had on July 9 transferred all cases concerning Vyapam scams and mysterious deaths allegedly related to it to the CBI. The apex court had asked the CBI to reply by July 24 on whether it should monitor the probe being conducted by the agency.

The CBI has so far registered over 12 FIRs in connection with the various Vyapam scam cases, including the death of an MBBS student Namrata Damor.

The opposition has been gunning for Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the scam. The Congress has been claiming that a fair probe into the multi-crore scam is not possible unless Chouhan quits as the Chief Minister.
