As many as 50 students of New College, on Monday, went out on a bike rally in a bid to raise awareness on the usage of helmets. The rally marked the NSS day celebrations at the college.
J Suliman, the programme officer, said the idea of holding a helmet rally came about after an incident near the flyover opposite the college in Royapettah, last month. “Two students, from another institution, met with an accident and succumbed to head injuries. We learnt that they could have been saved had they worn helmets. The students then decided they would do something to create awareness on the importance of wearing helmets,” he said.
The rally, which began from the college, was flagged off by the Principal, C Abdul Malik. It was routed through Gopalapuram before reaching Royapettah again. Students also held up placards with slogans urging motorists not to avoid helmets. They said the campaign would be a continuous affair with more events slated in the months to come.
