KOCHI: In the Special Olympics Kerala State Meet 2012, Ernakulam lived up to its reputation and talent, notching the second position, beaten only by Kottayam. Ernakulam scored 282 points behind Kottayam with 298 points, followed by Idukki. The district had come third in last year’s special Olympics. The event saw the participation of about 200 students from the district from 42 special schools.Ernakulam was trailing in the third position until the last minute, but a good performance in the relay pushed them up to the second position. Maintaining its track record, Nirmala Sadan School Muvattupuzha, scored the highest in the district with 109 points. Chavara Special School came second with 47 points. Alphonsa Sadan Angamaly, Sampoorna Ernakulam, Karuna Special School, Varapuzha and Snehasadan were among the schools that showcased some brilliant performances.“Ernakulam has been consistently performing well in the Olympics. As far as special school for mentally challenged are concerned sports is a subject in their academic course. Sports and games have a significant role in the development of their motor ability, decision making skills and physical fitness. In this context, this Olympics meet for the mentally challenged is a great endeavour,” says J Oommen, chairman of Special Olympics Kerala.Special Olympics Games is the world’s sports meet for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The state level meet organised across the different states of the country is aimed at providing a platform for special students to hone their skills before the international event. The sports meet has been a regular feature in India at the state levels since 1989. It also has the reputation of being held year after year by voluntary organisations with scarce government support. The next Special Olympics World Summer Games will be in Los Angeles, California, USA in July 2015.
