CHENNAI: A hot debate on Mullaiperiyar dam is likely to take place on Thursday during the special session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The special session was convened on two occasions - in 1993, for discussing the 69 per cent reservation issue, and over the Cauvery row, on December 28, 1995. The session is being held at a time when southern districts are limping back to normalcy after the Supreme Court dismissed the petition of Kerala government demanding to lower the storage level of the dam from 136 feet to 120 feet. To express the solidarity with the people of Tamil Nadu and all the political parties, the House will adopt a resolution that Tamil Nadu will not give up its rights over Mullaiperiyar dam because of the imaginary threat to the safety and security of the dam. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will be moving the resolution in this regard. For the first time since the issue was raised by Kerala in 1979, southern districts like Theni witnessed such a mass upsurge over the issue. Thousands marched towards Kumuli, the entry point of Kerala raising slogans to safeguard the dam. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has, on December 13, said that the Centre would convene a meeting of the officials of Tamil Nadu and Kerala again. Tamil Nadu, had already refused to take part in the talks scheduled for November 15 and December 16 asking the Centre to defer the negotiations till the Empowered Committee appointed on the directions of the SC, submits its report on the safety aspects of the dam.The Assembly will take stock of all the developments on this issue and adopt a resolution. A decision on sending an all-party delegation to meet the PM in this regard is likely to be taken during the meeting. After the leaders of all political parties express their views, the CM will make her concluding remarks responding to the views of the leaders.
