Socio Economic and Caste Census: Over 44 lakh families in rural India earn livelihood through domestic work
Country's first Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011 revealed that India has as many as 24.39 crore households, of which 17.91 belong to the rural areas.

The Narendra Modi government on Friday released country's first Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011, which revealed that India has as many as 24.39 crore households, of which 17.91 belong to the rural areas.

According to the data revealed in the census, India has as many as 68.96 lakh households headed by females, with no adult male member between age 18 and 59, while there are 7.16 lakh houses had differently able members with no other able bodied adult member.

About the source of income of families in rural India, the census revealed that while 9.16 crore households earn through manual casual labour, over 44 lakh families earn their livelihood through part time or full time domestic work.

The Ministry of Rural Development has said that it would use the data from the SECC in all its welfare programmes and policies.

According to the government, SECC data would have meaningful use in Housing for all, Education and Skills thrust, MGNREGA, National Food Security Act, interventions for differently able, interventions for women led households, and targeting of households/individual entitlements on evidence of deprivation, etc.
