CUMBUM: Public Welfare Department officials began searching for an ideal site to build a memorial for British engineer J Pennycuick, soon after CM J Jayalalithaa made an announcement in this regard on Sunday.A team of PWD engineers, led by senior building expert Rambabu, visited the bungalow where Pennycuick stayed near Gudalur and also areas adjoining the Lower Camp Electricity Sub-Station to identity the location.According to sources, a report on the inspection would be submitted to the CM immediately. Pennycuick had sold his property in England to construct Mullaiperiyar dam and divert water to five drought-prone districts of Tamil Nadu.Many people of Theni district have named their children and commercial establishments after the engineer. Meanwhile, farmers of Cumbum expressed happiness over the announcement. They said it will be nice if the memorial is constructed at the PWD bungalow as the engineer stayed there for a long period during construction of the dam.
