School kids taking banned drugs to excel in sports: report
The number of positive tests at school competitions like the National School Games is on the rise.

New Delhi: While Indian sports fight to erase the doping blot off its face, cases of school kids resorting to performance-enhancing drugs to excel in sports is on the rise, a report in the Hindustan Times said.

The report in HT said the number of positive tests at school competitions like the National School Games is on the rise, spreading the banned practice to the All India Inter-University Games and ruining many promising careers.

"Recently, at a CBSE track and field competition, a female athlete tested positive for steroids. Rampant doping has been reported from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) competitions as well," the report mentioned.

Many, according to HT, among the 62 athletes tested positive by the National Anti-Doping Agency are from inter-school meets that are not organised by the national federations.

According to a recent report by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), India is second only to Russia in the list of countries with most athletes blacklisted for doping. Until August, when the report was made public, 43 Indian athletes were serving IAAF suspensions for their involvement in doping, while Russia topped the list with 44 offenders.
