New Delhi: Taking a strong stand against terrorism, the third most senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Arijit Pasayat on Tuesday said that terrorists don't deserve to be given human rights.
Speaking at a seminar on terrorism Judge Pasayat lashed out at human rights activists. He rubbished the case of human rights violations of terrorists and said "terrorists who kill innocent people are animals."
Pasayat also said that those who kill innocent people with automatic weapons are not humans. He also virtually mocked human rights activists and said that animal rights should be invoked in the case of terrorists.
Meanwhile, Solicitor General Goolam Vahanvati also echoed the judge's views. He also said that if he was asked to be Mumbai terror attack accused Kasab's lawyer, he would have probably refused.
In December, the Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan had said that Ajmal Amir Kasab, - the lone terrorist arrested alive in the Mumbai attacks - should get a lawyer to defend himself so that "there is a fair trial".
"We should have strong laws but it should take care of providing basic human values to the accused," Balakrishnan had told a private news channel.
Also in December, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said human rights may be overlooked to fight terror.
“In certain circumstances states are both entitled and obliged to take steps that derogate from human right principals, we should not feel discouraged, certain rights and freedom can be derogated from but only to an extent to meet the security threat,” said the PM.
Amnesty International in December had slammed India's new anti-terror legislation to beef up police powers in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, saying it violates international human rights treaties.
The London-based human rights group called on President Pratibha Patil not to approve the legislation, which would double the number of days police can detain terror suspects before filing charges, from 90 days to 180, as well as boost their powers to conduct searches.
