Rs 551 crore spent on 42 lakh toilets in 7 years: Eshwarappa

In an attempt to put an end to the practice of open-defecation in the state as many as 41,87,908 individual toilets have been constructed in the past seven years, Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa informed the Legislative Council here on Tuesday.

In his reply to JD(S) member E Krishnappa, during the Question Hour, Eshwarappa said the state had spent over Rs 550.87 crore for the Total Sanitation programme and agreed to consider the demand to enhance the unit cost which is pegged at Rs 10,000. He said that Gulbarga and Yadagir districts combined received the highest amount of grants of Rs 30.41 crore towards the sanitation scheme.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress members, who staged a dharna in the Legislative Council on Monday continued it on Tuesday. They withdrew the agitation only after the House leader V Somanna assured them that there would be no unnecessary interruption from the treasury benches during the debate. Responding to the Chair’s appeal Opposition Congress leader S R Patil said that the Congress members were forced to stage dharna in the House because the ruling party members had tried to interrupt them when they were speaking on the Mangalore homestay attack.

Book on Indian fest

State government’s circular asking schools to purchase a book on Indian festivals came in for a sharp criticism by the Opposition members in the Assembly.

Raising the issue through a Calling Attention Congress member U T Khader said that the book titled “Habba Haridinagalu” (festivals) refers to only those festivals that are being celebrated by a particular religion and there was no mention of festivals of other religions. Primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri in his reply said it was not mandatory for schools to purchase the book.
