News of the alleged desecration spread to the Kargil region after which agitated Shia Muslims took out a procession.

New Delhi: Rioters torched the house of the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kargil and police had to resort to lathicharge and tear gas to disperse the mob.

Curfew has been imposed in Kargil where five policemen were also injured in the arson.

Earlier in the day, the news of the alleged desecration spread to the Kargil region after which agitated Shia Muslims took out a procession.

On Thursday curfew was clamped in Leh and its surrounding areas following clashes between Muslims and Buddhists over the alleged desecration of Quran at a mosque in Kargil even as Army and ITBP was called in to assist the civil administration as a precautionary measure.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) K Rajendra, who has been camping in the Ladahi capital, said the situation was under control and imposition of curfew and requisitioning of the army and ITBP had been done as a precautionary measure.

The tension spread across Ladakh. Earlier prohibitory orders were clamped in both the towns as incidents of stoning houses and establishments belonging to rival communities continued.

A defence spokesman said the civil administration, sensing trouble, sought army assistance in maintaining law and order in Leh following which five to six columns were rushed immediately to conduct a flag march.

Divisional commissioner Kashmir Basharat Ahmad Dhar and IGP Kumar have been camping in the Leh to monitor the situation.
