CHENNAI: There is immense potential in the field of Biotechnology in India, especially in Tamil Nadu, said VK Subburaj, Vice Chairman, Science City, while presiding over the inaugural function of an awareness campaign organised by Science City here on Tuesday.Stressing the need to create awareness among students and parents about the various career options that are available in the country, he said that parents were so obsessed with the career of their wards that they considered only medicine and engineering as the career options for their children. There were other courses that have a good scope. “Lately, there has been a change in the young minds, which should be welcomed and it is our job to guide the youngsters to choose the right job,” he added.Commenting on the job opportunities, he said that earlier it took four to five years to find a job after the completion of a course, but today things are different.The companies are coming to the campus to select the candidate even before the completion of the course.There are plenty of opportunities in Biotechnology which hasn’t been exploited in the country. Students should consider research as a career option, because scientists were paid very well in India, he said.In his address, SP Thyagarajan, Pro-Chancellor, Sri Ramachandra University, said that Science and Technology were the two sides of a coin that help build society and economy of a nation.There were plenty of career options in India.The central government was trying to woo youngsters towards the teaching profession by offering them good pay packages.The basic pay of a teacher at state university level was around `30,000. There was going to be a demand for five lakh teachers in the next five years in India, he explained.“Now, I feel I should have opted for Biology and Maths instead of Computer Science, when I was in school.” said Mohammed Ashadullah, a Class 12 student. “But, it doesn’t matter now because I want to become a civil engineer. I’ve applied for both civil and mechanical streams in a reputed college and I am hoping to get admission.” Students and parents from across the city took part in the awareness campaign on value and role of basic science education in the present generation. The campaign was organised with an aim to help choose the right career and also provide information about job opportunities in the field of science and technology.Three renowned scholars, Dr SP Thyagarajan, Dr J Daniel Chellapa and Er D Nedunchezhian delivered lectures on topics related to science and technology.
