A mass-delivery by Giorgio Armani made sure the red carpet belonged to the ladies.

New Delhi: The 79th annual Oscars on Monday featured its most ethnically varied lineup ever with but the red carpet didn't quite reflect the diversity when it came to the invitees of the Sunday Best Wardrobes.

Among the men and their Tuxedoes, if you've seen one, you've seen them all.

A mass-delivery by Giorgio Armani made sure the red carpet belonged to the ladies.

And the ever watchful fashion followers will notice the new trend: The hottest of Hollywood divas - Cate Blanchett, Beyonce, Kate Winslet, and Maggie Gylenhaal - all sported one-shoulder dresses that were big on glassy baubles..

While Helen Mirren turned out in a demure ensemble, Nicole Kidman was the brightest splash of colour in vivid scarlet pastels but without doubt, pastels ruled the red carpet.

Penelope Cruz, Rachel Weisz and Cameron Diaz all sported the classic off-shoulder.

But not all of them got it quite right. While Beyonce was a vision in her aqua gown, the other Dreamgirl, Jennifer Hudson's high bling space jacket was a bit of a disappointment!

And bringing in a dash on the exotic was Deepa Mehta, who stuck to the Indian fashion favourite, a saree designed by Ritu Kumar.

Gwyneth Paltrow made a strong fashion statement in Zac Posen's apricot spider-web tulle-and-chiffon gown, and Nicole Kidman made a bold color choice with her bright red Balenciaga halter gown with an oversized bow at the neck. Reese Witherspoon's strapless Nina Ricci with a tiered bottom was a deep purple, and Naomi Watts' Escada gown was yellow with a sapphire blue sash.

Jada Pinkett Smith wore a corset-style strapless gown in gold lame by Carolina Herrera, and Jessica Biel's hot pink halter was selected straight from Oscar de la Renta's fashion show earlier this month in New York. Kelly Preston's animal print gown was by Dolce & Gabbana.

'This is the year of extravagant designs - fancy fabrics, feathers as trim, unexpected stones and metallics,'' observed Tom Julian, fashion commentator for the website Oscar.com.

Jennifer Lopez's lilac Marchesa gown had an antique jeweled neckline that created a chain-link effect. Asked why she chose the gown, Lopez's husband, Marc Anthony, spoke up: ''I chose it.''

What's your reaction?
