New Delhi: Leander Paes on Sunday suffered a shock defeat at the doubles event at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Paes and his and partner Paul Hanley of Australia lost to Rohan Bopanna of India and Rajeev Ram of the US in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in the second round

Paes and Hanley, seeded fifth, had won against the unseeded pair of Luis Homa of Peru and Stefan Koubek of Austrian in straight sets 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7).

But sixth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles sailed into the third round of the men's doubles.

The Indo-Bahamas pair beat Yves Allegro of Switzerland and Kristof Vliegen of Belgium in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Bhupathi and Knowles won against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny and Germany's Mischa Zverev 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 in their first round encounter.
