BHUBANESWAR: Even as persistent rains across all the catchments have left many rivers in spate, the weather office on Saturday predicted formation of yet another system off the Orissa coast.Certain pockets of Balasore reported flash floods in Budhabalanga river. In Mayurbhanj’s Pakatia village under Jharpokharia police limits, a villager died following a wall collapse. The Revenue Control Room sources said Budhabalanga was flowing above the warning level, but showed a receding trend. Against the warning mark of 7.21 metres, the river was flowing at 7.84 metres along NH 5. However, things could get worse if the rains do not relent.Down south, Vansadhara was flowing above the warning level. At Kashinagar, the river was flowing at 53.95 metres, marginally above the warning mark of 53.6 metres. This river, also, was reporting a falling trend.Mahanadi, too, did not show any sign of danger. Hirakud Dam authorities released more water from the reservoir where the water level stood at 625 feet. At least 18 sluice gates had been opened till 6 pm while inflow had dropped from 3.11 lakh cusec to 2.88 lakh cusec. At Munduli, the river was discharging 4.74 lakh cusec all through the day. However, there was widespread concern with weathermen predicting that all the catchments will receive more showers during the next 24 hours.Besides, a fresh system was forecast during the next 48 hours by the Met department. The cyclonic circulation or low pressure was expected to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal parts of the State by Sunday.
