Online sales this festive season is likely to grow by a whopping 130 per cent.

Mumbai: Twenty-eight-year old Divyani Mohan is among hundreds of Indians who chose to do their Diwali shopping from the comfort of their home.

According to industry body Assocham, online sales this festive season is likely to grow by a whopping 130 per cent.

With 20 lakh shoppers clicking on for festive shopping last year, Indian e-commerce witnessed sales worth Rs 250 crore.

This year, the numbers are likely to go as high as 30 lakh consumer for shopping online

“The kind of offers available online are far more superior than the ones available offline,” Vice President, Indiatimesshopping.com, Upen Roop Rai.

There are a number of reasons for sudden online retail revolution. Convenience is the biggest factor that drives people online for their shopping.

Security is also becoming a major factor in the metors especially while shopping in corwded places during the festive season

Going online also gives one access to wide-range of products and one can even compare and read reviews before making a decision.

Improvements in logistics and delivery mechanisms have made buying and gifting a simpler task.

“You sit at home, identify different gifts for relatives or colleagues and get them delivered at the doorstep without stepping out of house,” says CEO, Homeshop18, Sundeep Malhotra.

On the whole, Indian e-commerce was estimated at Rs 2,200 crore last year and this year, it's expected to touch a whopping Rs 5,500 crore, a growth of about 150 per cent.

The two weeks ahead of Diwali are likely to contribute almost 15 per cent of this total.

A whopping 38 million people shop online every year and with the process getting more streamlined, window shopping is going to get a whole new meaning.
