Olympics for former child labourers

The former child labourers from different parts of Chennai took part in the sports event conducted by Karunalaya Social Service Society, here on Saturday.

Karunalaya Social Service Society is an NGO working for the protection and development of street and child labourers in Chennai since 1995. With the support of Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, has been working towards the prevention and intervention of child labour.

Dr N Paul Sunder Singh, secretary, Karunalaya said, “A rapid assessment study to identify the child labour employed in some of the establishments in North Chennai was conducted last year as part of the project.

The study found that children were employed in 32 types of industries such as textile stores, godowns, mechanic shops, and hotels. Most of the children were rescued and were sent to schools. The society must recognise them as normal children. In order to provide an opportunity to showcase their talent in sports, we have conducted this event and we call it as Former Child Labourers Olympics 2012. We believe, by recognising them in such a way, we can bring smiles to their faces.”
