Volunteers of the Education Department’s National Service Scheme (NSS) held a rally to promote their campaign “Clean Puducherry, Green Puducherry” as part of the World Tourism Day celebrations here on Wednesday.
The rally was flagged off at the beach by Tourism Minister P Rajavelu in the presence of Tourism Secretary W V R Murthy and Tourism Director Dr A S Sivakumar.
The volunteers distributed pamphlets emphasising the importance of clean surroundings to tourists and visitors on the beach.
They also undertook a cleaning drive by clearing the beach of plastic bottles, bags, cups and glasses.
A similar campaign would be held in Karaikal on September 28.
It may be recalled that the Union Ministry of Tourism has launched a “Clean India Campaign” aiming to create a tourist friendly atmosphere in the country.
