London: Here's some good news for men who avoid using caps during sex as the contraceptive devices cause them to lose their erections - you can now try out the "Viagra condoms" instead of popping an anti-impotence pill.
Designers say the condoms, the CSD500, would help men with erection problems during sex; a gel, used to treat angina by increasing blood flow to the heart, is lined in the inside of the products thus directing more blood supply to the penis.
The makers say that men who use the condoms, during a trial, have reported firmer and stronger erections that lasted longer with their partners, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
It is hoped that the new product will reduce the spread of STIs by providing an incentive for men to use contraception. They could also prevent condoms unexpectedly slipping off, say its designers. However, the beneficial properties of the new product -- which is said to be close to regulatory approval in the UK -- may also attract men who want to use the contraception for
recreational purposes to improve their sex life.
James Barder, from makers Futura Medical, said: "The challenge is having a stable product in a condom -- a gel that doesn't do anything detrimental to the condom."
He said that immobilising the vasodilating gel inside the condom so that it only touches the wearer during sex was "the clever part". "Some products can degrade the latex very quickly. It has to be immobilised in the condom," he told the 'Wall Street Journal'.
Researchers found that men had previously avoided using condoms because they caused them to suffer with erectile problems. Unlike the blue pills, the Viagra condoms are not only targeted at people with erectile dysfunction.
Instead, it will help people who find condoms difficult to use.
