Those living at Sikandarpur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district have set a unique example by saving every drop of water. The villagers have grown vegetables in their courtyards by using water that has been drained from their kitchens. This has made this village a source of inspiration for other villages in the district and the state.
If anyone wants to come to this village, they may just ask from someone “Where is the village with kitchen garden?” While people may not be aware of the name of this village, if someone enquires about the village with kitchen garden or the village where vegetables are grown in the courtyard, they will immediately know which village is being referred to.
By saving every drop of water, women have created kitchen gardens in their courtyards, which have been praised by top officials of the district.
Though Sikandarpur village comes in the list of backward villages, women here have changed its fate. This village located at Parikshitgarh block, about fifty kilometers away from Meerut, has done such commendable work in water conservation that it has earned everyone’s praise.
Women here buy very few vegetables from outside because most of it is grown at their courtyards. There are hundreds of houses in this village and everyone presents the same picture. At every courtyard, you will find vegetables like cabbage, ladies finger, chilli, gourd, brinjal, papaya, coriander and jackfruits.
The most outstanding aspect is that these vegetables were grown from grey water or waste water. In this village, you will not find household water collected anywhere in the streets. This is because the water that is used in kitchen does not go out of the house.
This village has also won the hearts of the officials of Parikshitgarh block in Meerut. The ADO said that such a village certainly sets an example for the entire society.
In Sikandarpur village, drains are almost non-existent. This is because not even a single drop of water can go outside the house. Women have set an example of self-reliance by growing vegetables at their home.
