The Delhi Police affirmed to the Delhi High Court on Monday that all cases of sexual harassment against self-identifying transgender persons should be registered under Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code which deals with “assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty”. The court was hearing a petition moved by a transgender student of Delhi University after the police refused to lodge a sexual harassment case against one of her male classmates citing ‘lack of an appropriate penal section’. The decision comes days after the passing of the much contested Transgender Bill, which does not accord punishment to perpetrators of sexual violence against transgender persons specified in the IPC.Chattisgarh CM delivers on promise, moves to give land back to farmers
Newly elected Chattisgarh Chief Minister, Bhupesh Bhagel, on Monday issued directions to officials to complete the process of returning land to farmers and tribals. The move was made towards fulfilling the campaign promise that the CM and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi made to the farmers of Lohandigua area in the Bastar district, whose lands were acquired by the Tata Steel in 2008 . Nirupam Sen, among many things, was the right-hand man of CPI(M) leader and former Chief Minister of Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Sen was the mastermind behind the industrial reforms policy in the state and headed Bengal’s Industry, Public Undertakings and Industrial Reconstruction, Planning and Development departments in 2001.
