The bridge is the second largest bridge in Asia spanning a length of 4.9 kms. Connecting the banks of Brahmaputra river, the bridge is being inaugurated after a 21-year long wait having faced a series of missed deadlines and multiple protests primarily around the its naming. Organizations from the Ahom, Chutia, Deuri, Mising communities, the Bhartiya Janata Party themselves and the ULFA, all staked claims on the bridge’s name. The Delhi Police affirmed to the Delhi High Court on Monday that all cases of sexual harassment against self-identifying transgender persons should be registered under Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code which deals with “assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty”. The court was hearing a petition moved by a transgender student of Delhi University after the police refused to lodge a sexual harassment case against one of her male classmates citing ‘lack of an appropriate penal section’.
