The recently-formed Goa Democratic Front (GDF) would be setting up branches in at least 20 Assembly constituencies in the state soon, it said on Saturday.

Dayanand Narvekar, a former state finance minister who recently left Congress to form GDF (of which he is now the president), on Saturday said in Panaji that several other Congressmen who felt abandoned were joining his party.

"To begin with we will have a presence in 20 out of the 40 constituencies," said Narvekar, who had earlier revealed plans to contest from the North Goa Lok Sabha seat.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the party would start preparing for the 2017 Assembly elections, he said.

The party is yet to choose its symbol. It has set up units in Siolim, Aldona, Porvorim and Thivim.

Narvekar said that a lot of people were attracted to the GDF which had promised to provide a political alternative.

He had faced accusation of involvement in a ticket scam at the time of an India-Australia match in 2001 when he headed the Goa Cricket Association. He said that BJP-led government at the time had falsely implicated him, which was established in the High Court later.

Professionals such as doctors and engineers too were getting attracted to his party, he claimed. "GDF was initially an NGO which I had formed and I have done several social activities under the banner. So now it is not difficult for me to reach the masses," he said.

In North Goa Lok Sabha constituency, he would be facing BJP's Sripad Naik, Congress's Ravi Naik and AAP's Dr Dattaram Desai.
