BERHAMPUR: The mystery disease claimed two more lives on Saturday taking the toll to eight in Kantiagada and Podempeta villages under Ganjam block. While most of the affected are approaching witch doctors for succour, 15 patients have been admitted to Chhatrapur hospital in the last five days. The last two deaths were reported from Podempeta village. CDMO S K Patnaik with a team of experts visited Podempeta on Saturday and got two seriously ill patients shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. The reports of blood sample sent to MKCG are awaited.While allegations of spurious alcohol behind the deaths are doing the rounds, the Exercise officials have termed them baseless.The symptoms of the disease, according to a senior doctor, hinted at consumption of methyl alcohol.Meanwhile, the Excise sleuths conducted raids in the two villages and destroyed huge quantity of illicit liquor and arrested 22 persons.
