Lahore: The current political situation prevailing in Pakistan will lead the country to civil war, and President Pervez Musharraf can only avoid the situation by resigning from both offices - Army Chief and President - said PPP leader Ghulam Mustafa Khar has said.
"Musharraf's regime has destroyed the country's unity, judiciary, bureaucracy, press, army and political parties," said Khar, who is also the former chief minister of Punjab.
He said that every military ruler in Pakistan, in the past, damaged the country's economy and integrity, by undermining democracy.
"Pakistan's economy and integrity have been damaged by every military ruler that came to power. Generals undermine democracy by concentrating powers in their hands and destroying provincial autonomy. High levels of corruption and inefficiency in government departments and a dire law and order situation in the country mark military rule," he said.
Praising former military chief Jehangir Karamat for "gracefully resigning" from his post, he advised army officials to follow Karamat's example and resign if they develop differences with the government.
He requested world leaders to use their influence to ensure free and fair elections in Pakistan, and also to ensure former premiers Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and MQM chief Altaf Hussain participate in the polls.
