New Delhi: Impressed with the functioning of Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and rural road construction schemes in the country, Mexico has said it will model its own welfare programmes for poor on these initiatives.
"I came to know about the successful run of MGNREGA and rural roads construction programmes in India. Mexico will take help of these schemes to draw its own programme for uplift of our rural population," said Mariano Ruiz Funes, Mexican Vice President for Agriculture.
He said they would take positives from these schemes to implement welfare programmes suiting their socio-geographical conditions.
Funes said rural areas in Mexico's southern part were gripped with poverty. "Social welfare programmes like MGNREGA could help us mitigate misery of people there."
Funes, who headed a delegation of officials and entrepreneurs, said he came to know about the schemes during a discussion with Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and his deputy Harish Rawat in New Delhi.
Launched in 2005, the MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
Funes also hailed rural road construction programmes in India and said his country would try to adopt similar technology.
