Background
Born in Lucknow, Upadhyaya’s musical journey began early under the tutelage of his mother, mastering piano and later Indian percussion (Tabla) and dance (Kathak). According to Vijay’s blog, his passion for conducting emerged during his teenage years, leading his school choir at just 14.
After pursuing studies in English literature, Economics, and History at Lucknow University, Upadhyaya ventured to Austria, where he honed his skills at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He conducted choirs and brass bands in Eastern Styria, immersing himself in Austrian culture and mastering the local dialect.
Since settling in Vienna, Upadhyaya has focused on composing alongside his conducting duties. His compositions, including the acclaimed symphonies “Prayer Flags” and “Chang’An Men – Gate to long-lasting Peace,” blend influences from Indian and Chinese cultures with Western classical traditions. In 2010, Upadhyaya established the India National Youth Orchestra and Chorus, to nurture young musicians and provide them with orchestral and choral experience.
His cultural contributions extend globally, having served as conductor and composer for the China National Symphony Orchestra and led numerous international projects in collaboration with the Austrian Foreign Ministry and European Union. Recognised for his cultural diplomacy and musical achievements, Upadhyaya received the Golden Award of honour in Austria.
