London: An Indian doctor with a degree and experience from London may no longer be as impressive as it sounds. The General Medical Council in London, has laid over hundreds of Indian doctors every year.
Britain's National Health Service is a huge network supported by thousands of Indian doctors. The health service functions under the watchful eye of the General Medical Council (GMC).
However, in the past couple of years, the council has had to take disciplinary action against many Indian doctors.
Former member, GMC UK, Dr Shiv Pandey says, "Action has been taken for a range of reasons - from failure to diagnose, to treat, respond to the cause, financial fraud, sexual relations with patients."
The General Medical Council of UK is the body that polices such cases.
Director of Registration GMC, Amanda Watson says, "The council is a regulatory body for doctors in the UK. We hold a register of doctors that are fit to practice and where a doctor fails to meet the standards expected of them, we can remove them from this register."
However, the threat of removal does not stop many doctors from practising elsewhere.
"There are a number of doctors who are suspended and cannot practise for a period of time. However, they go back to the subcontinent - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and also the Middle East - and practise there," says Dr Shiv Pandey.
Nonetheless, Amanda Watson assures patients that they have no need to worry and can ensure the credibility of their doctor by logging on to GMC's website and going through the GMC register, which is a public document and is available to anyone who wants to check it.
GMC advises that everyone should check their doctor out before they go to them for treatment because if a doctor is not good enough to treat people in Britian, then he cannot be good enough to treat anyone in India either.
