An 85-year-old man petitioned the district administration for the seventh time pleading to retrieve his agricultural land from an encroacher, and said if officials failed to help him, he would resort to self-immolation.
Muthu Manthiri of Pudu Ponganur village, who had come with a can of kerosene, said that he had been going from pillar to post to get back his land, even after the court had passed a verdict in his favour seven years ago.
The elderly man submitted the petition to Collector P Sankar and said he would set himself ablaze if the district administration failed to retrieve and restore his 1.3 acre of agricultural land at Kuppusalai village from his neighbour Kuppusamy. However, the police seized the kerosene can from the elderly man and warned him not to repeat such an act again.
The petitioner said he approached the court against Kuppusamy and filed a case. The Walajapet Court had passed a verdict in his favour in the 2006. “Though the court issued an order stating that the land belongs to me, revenue officials had failed to survey the land and hand it over to me. I have petitioned the district collector six times since then; this is my seventh petition,” said Muthu.
