Tiruchy: It may be strange and shocking too. Refusal to retract appearing as a witness in a murder case took a serious turn with the victim being ostracised from his village. N Karunanidhi, a resident of Somarasampettai, on Monday, alleged that he was ostracised from the village due to pressure from a local DMK functionary, since he had been witness to a murder committed by the latter. The DMK functionary, Palaniandi, was also behind the arrest of his wife and brother in a false case, he said.
Karunanidhi, the petitioner, charged that the union secretary of Manikandam, Palaniandi, was involved in the murder of Purushothaman. Six persons, including Karunanidhi, were named witnesses in the case.
Alleging that he was asked not to testify, the petitioner said that Palaniandi was ready to pay Rs 25,000 as bribe to all the six witnesses. With the former refusing to accept the bribe, enmity developed between Karunanidhi and Palaniandi, as mentioned in the petition.
Incited by Palaniandi, some of his associates - Palaniyyan, Ravi, Rajendran and Subramani - along with a few others damaged Karunanidhi's house several times, but police refused to file a complaint.
As Karunanidhi stood firm in his resolve to remain a witness in the murder case, the DMK functionaries conspired to orstracise him from the village. Accordingly, on June 9 a meeting was held in which the village head Sivanthilingam ordered his ostracism which was conveyed through the beating of a drum. "I had approached the police several times, but no action was initiated and so I decided to seek help of the collector," he said in his petition.
