BHUBANESWAR: Already battling sweltering heat, life for the citizens worsened with the drop in voltage and frequent disruptions in power supply.Sources in Gridco said the voltage dropped to 206 KV on Wednesday in the 220 KV grid sub-stations at Chandaka and Narendrapur, which feed power to the capital city, due to low generation of power from the hydel and thermal power stations. The low voltage in the grid sub-stations has its resultant effect on the domestic consumers. After experiencing low voltage in major grid sub-stations, the State load despatch centres (SLDC) requested the power generating stations to step up generation to maintain the grid stability. The entire city experienced extremely low voltage today due to fluctuation in the frequency. The 33 KV lines were carrying 26 KV and this is mostly due to gap in the demand and supply situation, said a senior officer of CESU. Similar is the condition in Cuttack. When the power demand of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar is more due to high humidity, the low voltage has aggravated the situation. The low voltage leads to frequent disruption of power as more and more consumers are using ACs to beat the heat.Even as the Government claims that there is no shortage of power, distribution companies said the supply is much less than the demand. Though there is no official regulation of power by Gridco, the distribution companies have to resort to unscheduled power cuts to bridge the gap between demand and supply. Unscheduled power cuts are rampant in rural areas but the urban centres are no better this time. While complaints about frequent power cuts have started pouring in from different parts of the State, Gridco sources said the supply was matching to the demand. There has been a fall in the demand due to storms coupled with rains in different parts of the State. The evening demand for power on Wednesday came down to 2,900 MW as against 3,300 MW due to ‘Kaal Vaisakhi’ in different parts of the state.
