KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Chamber of Commerce has appealed to the Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy to take steps to lift the ban on interstate transit of sand in Tamil Nadu, which prevents sand from being transproted to Karaikal.Last year, the Tamil Nadu government imposed a ban on interstate transit of sand. As a result, sand transportation to Karaikal from the nearby Nagapattinam district was completely stopped. As Karaikal district does not have adequate water resources suitable for sand mining, construction works have been severely hit.In a representation to Puducherry Chief Minister Rangasamy, Anandan, secretary of the Karaikal Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the construction activities in Karaikal district, especially government projects, had come to a standstill due to non-availability of sand. “As new governments have taken charge in both Tamil Nadu and Pondy, it might be easy to lift the ban now. Puducherry Chief Minister should initiate talks with the Tamil Nadu government and get permission for sand transit to Karaikal,” he said.
